Institute of Agricultural Economics (IAE) reported that in 2016 Ukraine exported a record volume of 40.2 MMT of grain, which is 7.5% higher than a year earlier. In particular, last year Ukraine exported 17.9 MMT of wheat, 17.3 MMT of corn and 4.8 MMT of barley.

“The record volumes of grain crops export in 2016 due to the fall in international commodity prices didn”t bring the same kind of record of foreign exchange revenue. It remained almost at the level of 2015 – around $ 6.1 billion”, – said the deputy director of IAE, Nikolai Pugachev.

It is noted that the largest buyers of Ukrainian grain in 2016, as before, were Asian, African and EU countries.

“Peculiar feature of 2016 was that exports of Russian grain strengthened further the Asian region. Countries of the region have secured nine places in TOP-10 of the major Russian grain importers with a total share of 54.3%. At the same time, they knocked out the countries, which were in the ranking in 2015 – Italy from fifth place, the Netherlands from the seventh, Tunisia – from the tenth. Only Spain retained its third place”, – noted by IAE.

According to the report, Egypt kept the leading position in the ranking of the largest importers of Russian grain for several years, share of which in the total exports of these products in the past year was 12.4% or $755 million in terms of value. China remained on the second place with share of 7.6% and Spain held on the third with 7.1%.

In addition, Indonesia increased 2.1 times the volume of grain imports in value terms (up to $331 million). Its share grew up to 5.4% in the Ukrainian grain export, as a result, Indonesia has moved from eleventh to fourth position in TOP-10 ranking.

“India became a real highlight of 2016, which procured almost no grain from Ukraine in previous years, boomed in terms of grain imports from Ukraine. The value of shipments amounted to $316 million – 5.2% of total Ukrainian exports of the product. As a result, country occupied the fifth place in TOP-10 “, – reported by IAE.

Thailand has moved from ninth to sixth place in the ranking of main importers of grain with $301 million in value terms with a share of 4.9%.

Iran and Bangladesh increased purchases of grain more than twice, with shares of 4.9% and 4.8% respectively, which allowed them to move from TOP-20 ranking importers into TOP-10. Over 3% of the total exports of grain accounted for Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Italy, Libya, the Netherlands and Tunisia laid end to end.

“In total, these mentioned previously 14 countries accounted for more than 75% in the value of exports of Ukrainian grain crops” – concluded Nikolai Pugachev.
