Gross grain harvest in Ukraine increased up to 65.9 MMT or by 9.7% – State Statistics Service of Ukraine

According to information of the State Statistics Service of Ukraine 65 951.5 KMT of grain and leguminous crops were harvested in Ukraine in 2016. Compared to 2015 production of grain and legumes increased by 5.8 MMT or 9.7%, while at the same time the harvesting area reduced to 323.7 hectares, however, average yields increased as it was observed with grain – by 0.5 t / ha up to 4.61 t / ha, corn – by 0.89 t / ha up to 6.6 t / ha, wheat – by 0.33 t / ha to 4.21 t / ha. Worth mentioning, that wheat and corn accounted for nearly 81.9% of total gross harvest of grain.

Agricultural companies harvested 51 885.7 KMT of grain (78.7% of total gross harvest), households -14 065.8 KMT (21.3%), besides the yield of grain crops in companies (5.0 t / ha) was higher than in households (1.43 t / ha).

Yield of 2016 was much greater than it was in 2015 in terms of volumes, where the maize harvest was 27 963.5 KMT (growth of 4 635.9 KMT), barley – 9 428.6 KMT (growth of 1 140.2 KMT), although in percentage terms buckwheat became the leader in gross yield increase – by 176.4 KMT (growth of 37.7%), which was mainly due to increase in the productivity of land for this crop.

Wheat production fell by 505.3 KMT or 1.9% to 26 026.8 KMT due to reduction of the grain harvested area more than by 0.6 million ha, or 9.5% to 6.2 million ha.

Sunflower production amounted 13 604.5 KMT (processed) and increased by 21.7% in comparison to 2015 mainly due to increase in harvested area by 0.9 million ha or 17.6% to 6.1 million ha. Moreover, the productivity of land also increased to 2.24 t / ha, which is an increase of 0.08 t / ha or 3.7% than in the previous period. Conclusively, agricultural companies harvested 11 697.4 KMT of sunflower (22.5% more) with an average yield of 2.35 t / ha (in 2015 it equaled 2.3 t/ ha).

Soy production has also increased by 8.9% – up to 4 279.1 KMT. On the contrary, the gross harvest of canola decreased in comparison with the previous year by 33.7% and amounted to 1152 KMT due to reduced harvesting area by 222.3 thousand ha or 33.1%. Withal, the average yield of canola also dropped by 0.02 t / ha or by 0.8% to 2.57 t / ha.

Gross harvest of sugar beet (13 879 MMT) increased by 34.3% compared to 2015 mainly due to increased collection area (by 21.5%) and increase of productivity of land amounting 43.58 t / ha to 48.24 t / ha. At once, agriculture companies and holdings harvested 13.2 MMT or 38.3% more than previously.

Potato production amounted to 21.7 MMT, which is an increase against 2015 by 4.3% due to the growth in harvested area and yield. Production of vegetables also increased by 2.2% to 9.4 MMT due to the greater productivity of land as well. Fruit and berry production volumes decreased by 6.8% to 2 007.3 KMT, grapes – by 1.7% to 376.8 KMT.

Noteworthy that 97.9% of the potato, 85.9% of vegetables, 81.5% of fruits and berries, 21.3% of grain and leguminous crops, 14% of sunflower and 4.8% of sugar beet (mill) volumes amount was harvested by the households in the previous year.
