Stocks of Ukrainian grain were at the maximum level over the past few years as of the beginning of February 2017

According to ProAgro, agricultural companies (except small ones) possessed 22 078, 1 KMT of grain as of 1st of February, 2017, which is 18,8% higher than for the corresponding period of the previous year – particularly, on the 1st of December 2016 they possessed 28 428,7 KMT.

Thus, despite strong exports, stocks fell by only 6 350 KMT for the past two months and the volume of stocks remained the highest over the past few years. This is related to the fact that, despite the onset of winter, farmers continued to harvest corn (as of December 2, 2016, only 90% of the crop area was harvested). As a result, stocks continued to grow, however, domestic consumption of grain continued to decrease – both in food and feed industries.

In particular, such grain types were kept as of the reporting date:

  • Wheat – 6 985.5 KMT (-12.4% less than the last year), or 31.6% of the total grain storage volume;
  • Barley – 1 719.5 KMT (+29.6% increase) or 7.8% of the total grain storage volume
  • Corn – 12 237.1 KMT (+43.8% increase) or 55.4% of the total grain storage volume;
  • Rye – 116 KMT (+22.9% increase) or 0.5% of the total grain storage volume.

All in all, agricultural enterprises kept 12 024.4 KMT of grain, including:

  • 4 101.5 KMT of wheat,
  • 1 104.7 KMT of barley,
  • 6 0144 KMT of corn;
  • 6 KMT of rye.

Companies, which process and store grain possessed 10 053.7 KMT of grain:

  • 2884 KMT of wheat;
  • 614.8 KMT of barley;
  • 6 222.7 KMT of corn;
  • 53 4 KMT of rye.

The largest stocks of grain were located in:

 Poltava region – 2 856.7 KMT (due to the very large gross harvest of corn – 2 417, 2 KMT). Vinnytsia region was on the second place – 1661 KMT (due to the large stocks of corn and wheat – 941.2 KMT and 569.6 KMT, respectively). More than 1.5 MMT of grain were located in Kyiv, Cherkassy and Chernihiv regions. Meanwhile, in areas of the Black Sea (Odessa, Nikolaev and Kherson) the grain was stored in the elevators for further formation of export consignments, which were relatively small (less than 3 MMT in total).

The smallest volumes of stocks were in Transcarpathian region – only 25.4 KMT of grain were available in storages. Less than 200 KMT of grain stocks were in the other western regions of Ukraine: Lviv region -188.7 KMT; Ivano-Frankivsk region – 141.3 KMT, in the Chernivtsi region – 78.2 KMT. Small stock amounts could be explained by the fact that the amount of consumption is very low and crop areas are small as well in the above mentioned regions.
