In recent years, Ukrainian industry has produced four times more sunflower oil than Ukraine consumes. So, about 70% of the product is exported. Ukraine sells oil to more than 50 countries worldwide.
In MY 2007/08, the main importers of Ukrainian sunflower oil were EU countries, whose share in Ukrainian exports is about 50%, as well as the Middle East states, North Africa and the CIS.
Crude sunflower oil dominates in the oil exports structure. Its share in the oil exports sales has totaled 89-90% for several consecutive seasons.
Talking about the largest sunflower oil exporters one can mention Cargill, Grain Trading Company Allseeds Ukraine/Trade House Artos, Bunge Ukraine/Dnipropetrovsky Oil-Extracting Plant, Kernel Group of Companies, and Serna.
Like sunflower oil exports, shipments of sunflower meal also remain high. Domestic consumption of this product is limited by Ukrainian animal husbandry stagnation.
As opposed to other oilseeds export markets (rapeseed and soybean), Ukrainian sunflower exports are more strictly regulated by the state. The main reason of sunflower oil exports tariff regulation is the state policy aimed at limiting the raw material export sales, emphasizing the increase of the oilseed crush in Ukraine and export sales of sunflower products.
Import is insignificant as Ukraine is well provided with its own raw material, and until recently the market was protected with the high import duties for sunflower seeds and oil for industrial processing. Seeds for sowing are mainly imported, and in the recent years seeds imports have increased.
Producers from the USA, France and Turkey are the main suppliers of seeds for Ukrainian agrarians.
