Agrarians’ expenses for grain transportation by rail have doubled

The costs of Ukrainian grain producers on the railway transportation of agricultural goods to seaports in 2021 has doubled compared to the previous year.

This was stated by a member of the Logistics Committee of the European Business Association and advisor to the chairman of the board of Ukrzaliznytsia Yuriy Shchuklin, reports ProAgro Group with reference to “Economic truth”.

“In 2020, the rail logistics of harvested grain from 1 hectare cost an average of $300, and in 2021 – already $600. Railroad logistics costs have actually equaled producer costs per 1 hectare of grain,” he said.

The decisive factor in the growth of costs for farmers was an imbalance of supply and demand for railcars of Ukrzaliznytsia, which was formed before the fall of 2021.

Shchuklin said that the preconditions for the imbalance of supply and demand for grain cars were created in the spring and summer of 2021 by the “inaction of the previous management” of the state operator, which “was not interested in the market needs and did not come into contact with the agrarians”.
