Resumption of exports of products and fertilizers from Russia does not violate sanctions, – US Treasury Department

The Treasury Department issued a written clarification regarding the resumption of food and fertilizer exports from Russia and Ukraine.

Permission to export Russian food products and fertilizers came as part of an attempt by the UN and Ankara to conclude a package deal with Moscow that would also allow grain shipments from Odessa, ProAgro Group reported, citing the Voice of America.

The written clarification from the U.S. Treasury Department came the day after representatives of Ukraine, Turkey, Russia and the United Nations met in Istanbul last Wednesday, July 13, to negotiate the resumption of grain exports from Ukraine. Turkey announced that the sides will meet again next week to sign an agreement.

The Treasury Department said in a statement that the sale and transportation of agricultural products as well as medicines and medical equipment are permitted and do not violate a host of sanctions Washington has imposed on Russia.

Washington also stressed that the U.S. has not imposed any sanctions on the production, sale or transportation of Russian agricultural products, including fertilizers, and that insurance or reinsurance of transportation or shipment of these products is not prohibited.

At the same time, it is noted that allowing the resumption of Russian grain exports is a forced step to reduce global food shortages and attract poor countries in Asia and Africa to the side of the anti-Russian coalition, which Moscow has convinced that “the West starves them”.
