Famine threatens Africa as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

Farmers’ associations from 11 Central African countries say food disruptions caused by Russia’s war in Ukraine have forced millions of Africans to step up their fight for survival.

According to “ProAgro Group” with reference to the publication in the New Delhi Times, African farmers, who gathered this week in the capital of Cameroon, called on the governments of the region to help people cope with food shortages.

Representatives of more than 60 farmers’ associations met in the Cameroon capital on Tuesday and asked the governments of 11 Central African countries to invest in agriculture and reduce dependence on food imports.

Farmers say shortages, high prices and a deteriorating economic situation are reducing access to food for most households in Central Africa.

The publication notes that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has disrupted food exports from both countries. In April, economy ministers said during a videoconference that the war has deprived Central African countries of more than 55% of wheat, which is usually imported from Ukraine and Russia.
