ASF outbreaks increased this year in Europe

More cases of ASF have already been detected in pig farms in the EU and some neighboring countries this year than in the whole of 2020, with a particularly sharp increase registered in Romania.

ProAgro Group reports this, citing Meatinfo.

Outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF) have been reported in 13 European countries this year. According to the Friedlich-Loeffler-Institut (FLI), based on data from the Animal Disease Alert System (ADNS), in the European Union, Serbia, Moldova and Ukraine, 11,755 cases of infection in wild and domestic pigs have been identified as of last Friday. A total of 1,315 ASF outbreaks occurred in 2020, and that level is expected to be exceeded later this month.

In domestic pigs, the number of recorded cases of ASF infection is already much higher than last year’s level (1241 cases) and stands at 1676 cases. The leader here is Romania with 1495 cases of infection, which is 42% more than last year. In Poland, 119 cases of ASF in domestic pigs were registered this year, compared to 103 in 2020. In Serbia, the number of cases has doubled from 16 to 32. In Germany, only three cases have been reported so far, detected in July in farms in Brandenburg.
