Head of the UN World Food Programme warns of “tsunami of hunger”

The head of the UN Food Program, David Beasley, noted the worsening of the food situation and warned that the world faced a “global emergency of unprecedented proportions”, when 345 million people were on the verge of starvation, and 70 million were close to starvation because of the war in Ukraine.

It is reported by “ProAgro Group” with reference to “Voice of America”.

Beasley told the UN Security Council that in 82 countries where his organization works, 345 million people are experiencing an acute shortage of food. This is two and a half times more than before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

According to him, it is extremely alarming that of these, 50 million people in 45 countries suffer from extremely acute malnutrition and are “knocking on the door of hunger”.

“The wave of hunger has turned into a tsunami of hunger,” he said, pointing to rising conflicts, the economic impact of the pandemic, climate change, rising fuel prices and the war in Ukraine.
