Turkey reduces import of grain from Ukraine

According to ProAgro, since the beginning of MY 2016/17 till November inclusively, Turkey purchased 96,3 KMT of Ukrainian grain, which is 14.1% less than in the same period of the last season. Comparing MY 2014/15 and MY 2015/16, grain shipments from Ukraine to Turkey decreased by almost five times – from 773.4 KMT to 159 KMT.

Last season (compared to the previous one) major reduction in Ukrainian grain shipments to Turkey was due to barley – its exports decreased from 394.4 KMT to 11 KMT or more than 36 times. Also, wheat exports declined by more than two times and the decline is still visible in the current agricultural year. Thus, in July – November of MY 2016/17 Ukraine shipped 27 KMT of wheat to Turkey against 105.7 KMT in the same period of MY 2015/16.

At the same time, reduction of the grain shipments from Ukraine to Turkey in the past two seasons has happened while wheat and barley harvest increased in Turkey, consequently, reducing purchase volumes of the crops abroad. For example, in MY 2014/15 gross wheat harvest in Turkey was 15.3 MMT, while imports of grain – almost 6 MMT (Ukrainian share amounted 4.9%). But in MY 2015/16 Turkish wheat harvest rose to 19.5 MMT, respectively, imports fell to 4.4 MMT and the share of Ukrainian grains import fell disproportionately – to 2.6%.
