Wheat accounted for half of Ukrainian grain exports in July-December MY 2016/17, the main buyer of which was India

In comparison to the previous month in December 2016, Ukraine increased shipments to foreign grain, legumes and flour markets by 12% (to 4.5 MMT). At the same time, according to ProAgro, export of all major grain and flour has increased.

In December, it was the most -18.8% growth of Ukrainian corn in foreign shipments and its share of grain export rose to 59.8%. Export capacity increase is related to the strong demand from foreign buyers along with a large amount of domestic supply. Active demand of importers on the New Year eve also contributed to the growth of early grain shipments. In particular, barley exports rose by 5.1% and wheat – by 0.9% in comparison to November of the last year.

Additionally, the amount of millet and oat exports reduced in the same reporting month what is more in December oat shipments were on the lowest level since the beginning of the season. At the same time, the monthly export of sorghum totaled to the amount, which was 3.5 times more than the results over the previous five months combined.

Overall, in the first half of MY 2016/17 (July-June) Ukraine exported 23.1 MMT of grain, this is 6.1% more than in the same period of the last season. In total, barley contributed to 18.7%; corn – 24.8%, wheat – 49.8% of shipments amount. One of the most significant developments in export market was related to India, which became the biggest wheat buyer from Ukraine with a result of 1.8 MMT, although still a month before Thailand and Indonesia were ahead in this regard. Referring to other grain cultures, there were no significant changes in the structure of the leading importers – Saudi Arabia, which bought the most of barley volumes and Iran, which bought the most of corn volumes were the TOP importing countries of the above-mentioned crops during July-December.

Since the beginning of the season the largest exporters of grain remained: Nibulon (7.5% of total supply), Kernel (7%), State Food and Grain Corporation of Ukraine (STGCU, 6.4%), Cargill (3.6%) and Bunge Ukraine (2.8%).
