The EU, India and Iran remain the main buyers of Ukrainian grain in the current season

In January 2017 Ukraine reduced shipments to foreign grain, legumes and flour markets in comparison to the previous month by 15.8 – down to 3.8 MMT. At the same time, according to ProAgro, export of grain in total decreased. Only rye export increased (to 0.2 KMT) due to the resumption of the shipments after the preceding four-month break.

Ukrainian barley export decreased the most – by 48.4% in comparison to December 2016, and its share fell to 4.3% in the monthly export of grain. Also, the share of wheat decreased – down to 32.2%. However, corn shipments rose to 61.4% in total grain shipments.

Monthly shipments of millet and oats also decreased, additionally, exports of flour showed the lowest result in the season. In the first case, situation occurred due to falling of the own stocks including the reduction of early grain reserves. In the second case – the reduction of flour exports, as well as corn, was mainly due to the attenuation of trading activity during the Christmas holidays.

In just the first seven months of MY 2016/17 (July-June) Ukraine exported 27.1 MMT of grain, which is 3 MMT or 12.5% more than in the same period of the last season. The total volume of barley exports was 16.6%, corn – 33.9%, wheat – 47%. According to the results of the January exports, there were no substantial changes in the Ukrainian grain buyers – still, the largest buyer of Ukrainian wheat was India (20.1% of total exports of grain) and for corn it was Iran (17.3%), although the “primacy” still belongs to the EU countries (37%). Saudi Arabia was the main barley buyer of Ukrainian origin with 42% share.
