Next year rye bread may become scarce in Ukraine

In a year, rye bread in Ukraine may become scarce, as well as pearl barley and barley groats. Such a conclusion can be drawn from the speech of Dmytro Skorniakov, CEO of HarvEast Holding, during an online meeting at the Center for Social and Economic Research CASE Ukraine, ProAgro Group reports.

According to him, the cultivation of rye and barley has become unprofitable for domestic farmers. Due to the rise in price of all components of the technological process, as well as due to the breakdown of logistics chains, the production of these two crops has significantly increased in price. At the same time, farmers are unable to sell what they have grown at least with a minimum profit. And now no one will buy this grain for the real price.

“It makes no sense to produce such crops as barley and rye at all. Barley was going to China, but now it is impossible to send it there. Moreover, the domestic price for it is such that you have to collect 10 tons per hectare to break even. It is almost impossible. Therefore, I think that this season no one will sow these crops,” Skornyakov said.

So, if the state does not stimulate the production of rye and barley at least for the food needs of the population, as it was with buckwheat this year, then next year these crops will have to be either imported or reduced consumption.
