Prices for apples began to decline rapidly

Despite all the expectations of Ukrainian producers, the traditional for the New Year period surge in trading activity in the apple market in Ukraine did not happen.

As the gardeners themselves admit, this week the selling prices for apples began to decline rapidly, ProAgro Group reports with reference to EastFruit.

So, now Ukrainian gardeners are ready to ship apples at 6-12 UAH/kg, which is on average 19% cheaper than at the end of the last working week. The main reason for the reduction in price in this segment was a significant increase in apples on the market. Thus, most gardeners tend to sell these fruits as soon as possible in order not to spend money on storage, which this season promises to be record expensive.

Wholesale companies and retail chains in Ukraine also note a weakening in demand for apples, especially in the last two weeks. Market participants explain the decline in buyer activity by a large influx of low-quality products, which gardeners seek to sell in the first place and agree to concede the price of such fruits.

It should be added that today the prices for apples in Ukraine are on average 41% higher than last year’s, which is due to a decrease in apple production not only in Ukraine but also in the EU countries as a whole. According to the gardeners themselves, they hope for increased demand in this segment in the second half of the season, when the supply of quality apples will decrease to a minimum.
