The area under winter crops may increase in Ukraine

This year, Ukraine plans to sow winter crops on 65% of last year’s area – 4.7 million hectares, but due to the de-occupation of the territories, the projected areas may increase.

This was announced during a telethon by Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Markiyan Dmytrasevych, “ProAgro Group” reports with reference to UNN.

Dmytrasevych noted that the decrease in the area is due to the temporary occupation, hostilities and mining of agricultural land.

“The campaign for sowing winter crops has already started in Ukraine. Currently, it is expected to sow 65% of last year’s area – 4.7 million hectares. Taking into account the recent events on the liberation of Ukrainian territories from occupation by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, we have a reasonable optimism that this forecast of 4.7 million hectares will improve,” Dmytrasevych said.

He added that Ukrainian farmers have enough sowing material. According to the Deputy Minister, against the background of a decrease in the sown area, the proportion of crops is shifting towards rapeseed.

“This crop is more expensive and better withstands the logistical costs of our farmers, although it is a little more difficult to grow,” said Dmytrasevych.

In addition, he assured that next year Ukraine will be able to fully meet the domestic demand for buckwheat, because the sown areas for it have increased.
