The Ministry of Agrarian Policy expects stabilization of egg prices in November

During this year, the dynamics of egg prices shows large fluctuations. The Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine explains why this situation has developed and when to expect price leveling.

So, before the full-scale invasion of Russia in January-February 2022, the cost of eggs in Ukraine (for 10 pcs.) was about 35 UAH. In May-June, the price fell below cost – to 16.5-17 UAH. In July-August, it somewhat leveled off, but still remained at the cost level and amounted to 25.5-26 UAH. In September, it began to grow again, returning within a month and even reaching the pre-war level of 30 UAH. In October, it increased by another 23.5% compared to September.

The price increase was influenced by several factors. Firstly, seasonality. Secondly, due to the hostilities, a number of enterprises ceased their activities and significantly reduced production. In particular, LLC “Dmitrovskaya poultry farm” in Donetsk region, farm “Stimul 777” Luhansk region, branch “Bohodukhivska Poultry Farm” Kharkiv region, PJSC “Poultry Farm Avangard” Kherson region.

Thirdly, due to the rapid fall of prices in the summer, which were lower than the cost, the number of chickens in Ukraine has sharply decreased, which has not yet recovered in the required quantity. Also, during the war, the incubation of eggs to produce young poultry was partially suspended.

Currently, the wholesale price of chicken eggs in Ukraine is 43 UAH per dozen. However, in late October – early November the price will go down and stabilize, said First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Taras Vysotsky.

“Due to military actions, destruction of poultry complexes, problems with logistics, the number of chickens and production in general has sharply decreased. Egg producers were forced to sell products below cost. Since September, seasonal consumer demand has resumed, but the number of livestock in the areas where egg chickens are traditionally raised has not yet been restored, it will take at least two to three months. As a result, the supply of eggs on the market decreased, which provoked a jump in prices,” he explained.
