EU throws away more food than it imports

At a time when 33 million citizens of the European Union cannot afford enough food, 153.5 million tonnes of food is thrown away every year.

The EU throws away more food than it imports, which directly harms its food security due to the rising cost of living, warns a new report – No time to waste, published by environmental organisation Feedback EU.

Food waste accounts for up to 153.5 million tonnes of food annually. It contributes to at least 6% of the EU’s total greenhouse gas emissions.

At a critical time for the food system, when agriculture is suffering from an unprecedented summer drought and soaring prices due to the war in Ukraine, around 20% of the food produced in the EU is wasted. The amount of wasted wheat is equivalent to about half of Ukraine’s wheat exports, campaigners say.
