European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell reiterated Russia’s responsibility for the food shortage in the world caused by the Russian war against Ukraine and in particular the blockade of Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea.

ProAgro Group reports this, citing the Voice of America.

Borrell said Monday, June 20, that attempts to unblock grain shipments from Ukraine was one of the topics of the April 20 talks of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg.

“We are calling on Russia to unblock the ports … This is unthinkable. It is inconceivable that millions of tons of wheat remain blocked in Ukraine while people around the world suffer from hunger,” the EU official said.

He categorically rejected Moscow’s claims that international grain supply problems were caused by international sanctions, noting that the EU has not imposed sanctions on Russia’s agricultural sector.

“This is a real war crime, so I can’t imagine it continuing,” Borrell said.
