    Brief Description

This large-scale research addresses the main aspects of functioning of the Ukrainian grain exports – from grain production throughout its entire way to the port export terminals and railway transfer points.

The paper describes in detail production of grain and oilseed crops in Ukraine, its current and future export potential from the point of view of the market balance articles and their changes. The grain way to the market starts in the field. The main links of the export logistic chain described in the paper include the elevator facilities, automobile, railway and river transport as well as sea ports. Another not less important aspect from the point of view of logistic expenses is issuance of the necessary export documents. For all links of the logistic chain, problems and expenses are analyzed. We tried to answer the most important question that affects all Ukrainian exporters – why the risks and expenses related to the grain logistics in Ukraine are several times higher than in other states and what are the prospects for their decrease?

Our research also describes activities of all the principal players of the grain exports market – producers, traders, mediators, and forwarders as well as their influence on price setting in the Ukrainian grain market. There is an approximate assessment of the contribution of each group of the market participants and each logistic link in the final price of grain in a port.

The paper also presents an analysis of the state policy on development of the export infrastructure in Ukraine (or impeding it), prospects for the growth of production of grain and oilseeds in Ukraine, and development of the grain logistics, as well as the respective export prospects. The data on the Ukrainian grain export are presented, and the importance of Ukraine’s place in the global grain market is evaluated.
