Pork consumption increases in Ukraine

Pork is the only kind of meat, the consumption of which has increased in 2021. According to preliminary estimates of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, the consumption of pork and pork meat products in 2021 increased by 3.7% more than a year earlier, reports ProAgro Group, citing the Association of Pig Breeders of Ukraine.

The relevant ministry estimates the current average consumption of pork and pork meat products per capita at 19.5 kg. This is by 0.7 kg or 3.7% more than last year.

Such an increase compensates the corresponding decrease in the consumption of beef and poultry, so the meat ration of the average Ukrainian according to preliminary estimates remains at the level of 2020 – 53.8 kg in recalculation on meat.

The Association agrees with the estimates of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy on the increase in consumption of pork, noting that the demand for meat, not only in Ukraine but also in other countries largely depends on the solvency of the population. Now it is weakened because of the economic consequences of the pandemic and the rise in inflation.

At the same time, according to the State Statistics Service, the average consumer price of pork in January-October changed slightly in comparison with other types of meat – by 1% against 15% increase in price of beef and 20-25% increase in price of chicken.
