The reorientation of Ukrainian pig breeders to raise pigs of meat breeds has led to a shortage of fat in the country and the rapid growth of prices for it.

Lard in the markets is mainly from households. But to keep pigs, the owners admit, is not profitable at all: a lot of expenses and a lot of work.
The shortage of fat, above all, appeared because all farms in the country switched to the so-called meat breeds of pigs, there is higher demand for them and it is easier to raise. Meat-packing plants now give 48 hryvnias per kilogram of live weight. And farmers are just counting the losses. Now meat is much cheaper than lard. Up to ten percent of pork consumed by Ukrainians is imported.
Experts do not expect reduction of the price of lard. Shortage of pork may appear in the world. In Europe farmers already reducing livestock because of the rise in price of feed.
