MPs propose to return state regulation of food prices

The Verkhovna Rada has registered a bill that proposes to return cancelled in 2017 state regulation of prices for socially important food products and set a markup on them within 5-15% of the manufacturer’s selling price.

According to ProAgro Group with reference to Interfax-Ukraine, the initiator of the document is a group of members of parliament.

The list of food products that are of significant social importance is set by the Cabinet of Ministers. In this case, according to the bill, the government will be required to introduce state regulation of prices for buckwheat, granulated sugar, wheat flour, pasteurized milk 2.5% fat, rye-wheat bread, wheat flour loaf, chicken eggs category C1, chicken carcass, still mineral water, butter with fat content of 72.5% and sunflower oil.

It is expected that the implementation of the norms of this bill will restore state regulation of prices for socially important food products, which is especially important for vulnerable segments of the population.

The parliamentarians refer to the experience of the EU countries where, according to their data, 88-97% of agricultural products are subject to state control. The authors of the document point out that in the EU, first of all, the prices of agricultural products (wheat, barley, rye, corn, rapeseed, sunflower), as well as cattle, milk, sugar and olive oil are supervised.
