Ukrainian scientists have selected a new variety of winter rye

Volyn scientists have selected a new variety of winter rye “Serpanok”, designed for use in the baking industry.

This was told by the head of the plant breeding and selection laboratory of the Volyn State Agricultural Experimental Station of the Institute of Potato Growing of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Olena Nechiporuk, ProAgro Group reports with reference to “Ukrinform”.

“We have selected a new variety of winter rye “Serpanok”, which has passed varietal trials in all varietal separation stations of Ukraine, received a certificate and a patent, which already give us the right to engage in its wide cultivation. If traditionally rye is planted in about 20 numbers of September – early October, this variety can be planted even in the 20s of October”, – said Nechiporuk.

According to her, sort “Serpanok” is more productive than previous varieties of winter rye, which were selected by the station. Plant height is 120-130 cm, and the potential yield is 10-11 tons.

“Serpanok” is resistant to diseases. The variety requires basic fertilization with a complex nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium fertilizer in the fall and spring dressing on frozen-thawed soil. This rye is undemanding and can grow on acidic soils that are unfavorable for wheat. For the Polissya zone, it is one of the indispensable cereal crops in the crop rotation.
