UGA asks the government to organize a “green corridor” for grain through Moldova

The Ukrainian Grain Association has asked the government to organize a “green corridor” to transport grain to the river ports of the Danube through the only accessible route through the Moldovan village of Palanca, ProAgro Group reports.

“Now most of the grain exports are carried out through Ukrainian ports of the Danube. Unfortunately, one of the ways to access the Danube ports – the bridge over the Dniester estuary is damaged and now the movement of railway cars and road transport is significantly hampered. Another way to access the Danube ports is the road through the village of Palanca (Moldova). Expectedly, this road has not been previously used for the transportation of goods, so its capacity is significantly limited,” says the appeal of UGA.

The association noted that the capacity of land and river crossings is significantly limited. Until February 24, 2022, 95-98% of grain export was carried out through sea ports, the volume of 5-6 million tons per month. Now Ukraine can export no more than 1.5 million tons per month through all available alternative routes.

As of today, export of grain cargoes is one of the main sources of replenishment of currency reserves of the state and financing of the work of commodity producers, UGA says. Moreover, Ukraine is a key guarantor of food security not only for our country, but also for the whole world.
