Is famine threatening Ukraine and should we “put the brakes” on food exports?

The world is predicting a global food crisis, and the war unleashed by Russia against Ukraine is not its only factor. If everything is indeed so bad in the world market of foodstuffs, we should probably shelve our grain. All the more so because evil tongues say that Ukraine has a two-year supply of grain only “on paper”, while in fact we have not enough of it.

Experts interviewed by KP in Ukraine categorically refute these rumors, says ProAgro Group, citing a publication in the paper.

Thus, according to the deputy director of ProAgro Maria Kolesnik, stocks of grain in Ukraine really are enough for more than one year of consumption.

Economist Vladislav Bankov also believes that today Ukraine has a surplus of grain, which has led to a drop in domestic prices, and in the fall, if there is no escalation of hostilities, we will also have surplus grain.

“The problem is that it has to be stored somewhere, and literally in a month or a month and a half a new crop will come, which also needs to be shipped somewhere,” says the economist. – And this is against the background of logistical difficulties and lack of fuel”.

Despite the fact that Ukrainian experts are very skeptical about predictions of hunger, many Ukrainians honestly do not understand why we should sell grain under such conditions, especially taking into account the logistical difficulties. Maybe we should let it lie at home? It will not be superfluous…

Economists explain: today we have a peculiar exchange: Ukraine gets assistance in the form of weapons, and Europe gets a buffer zone and food supplies to its countries.

“In such a situation, holding grain for domestic consumption is not the best option,” says Maksym Orishchak.
