Ukraine may introduce a food card system

The Presidential Office is considering the possibility of introducing a food card system in Ukraine to help vulnerable and unprotected groups of the population in conditions of a sharp rise in food prices.

This was stated by the presidential advisor on economic issues Oleg Ustenko, reports ProAgro Group, referring to the BBC Ukraine.

According to him, such a program of additional assistance may arise from a possible sharp rise in food prices. Accordingly, the Office of the President is working on “anti-crisis measures.”

“The president’s office’s position is more than clear: first of all, the most vulnerable and unprotected segments of the population should receive support. How? Options will be considered. This may include additional payments to compensate for rising prices, and the introduction of food cards in “Diia” system, as practiced in the U.S.,” Ustenko explained.

Among the “spare” solutions is also a partial reduction of VAT on food products. However, now the Ukrainian government has taken a different path – it has agreed to supply gas of domestic production at a discount for those enterprises of the food industry, in the cost of production of which it represents a significant share.
