EU proposes to suspend all existing duties and quotas on Ukrainian imports

The European Union has proposed to temporarily cancel all existing customs tariffs and quotas on Ukrainian exports in order to support the economy of the country, which suffered from the war.

This is reported by ProAgro Group, citing information from Bloomberg.

The proposal concerns the temporary elimination of tariffs and quotas on steel, industrial goods and agricultural products, which are not yet covered by the EU trade agreement with Ukraine.

“The EU has never before taken such unprecedented measures to liberalize trade: granting Ukraine zero tariffs, zero quotas for access to the EU market. Since the beginning of Russian aggression, it has become a priority for the European Union to support Ukraine’s economy,” EU trade chief Valdis Dombrovskis wrote in his Twitter today .

It is noted that the free trade agreement between Ukraine and the EU from 2016 removed most of the trade barriers between them. According to these agreements, some tariffs and quotas on several categories of goods should eventually be terminated or excluded from the agreement. Now the EU is proposing to temporarily lift these restrictions.

The proposal must be agreed to by all 27 member states and the European Parliament before it takes effect. Earlier this week, the UK announced that it would reduce duties on all goods from Ukraine to zero.
