India intends to replace Ukraine on the global wheat market

Indian grain has become competitive for the first time in many years after Russia blocked wheat exports from Ukraine. According to Bloomberg, Egypt has already started to consider buying Indian wheat, which it previously ignored due to its poor quality, ProAgro Group reports.

Egypt requires importers to provide grain for inspection before shipment. It must be cleaned of impurities such as dust, sand or stones. In India, this process is usually done by hand, which is poor quality.

In addition, Indian grain often suffers from smut, a fungal disease that affects wheat, triticale, and rye. Flour made from it is unfit for consumption.

Parts of India use a lot of pesticides, which also diminished the grain’s attractiveness.

Despite this, India hopes to export a record 15 million tons of grain this year. And Narendra Modi’s government has said it is ready to export the highest quality wheat to Egypt.
