According to the estimates of the Humanitarian Research Laboratory (HRL) of the Yale School of Public Health (YSPH), out of approximately 58 million tons of crop storage capacity in Ukraine, 14.57% were affected by the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

This is reported by ProAgro Group with reference to the publication of Conflict Observatory.

According to the results of the study, it is noted that one in six (15.73%) Ukrainian granaries felt the consequences of the war. At the same time, researchers emphasize that deliberate and indiscriminate targeting of crop storage infrastructure may constitute a war crime and a crime against humanity under international law.

As of July 2022, Russia and the “joint forces” controlled storage capacities of approximately 6.24 million tons, including damaged ones (the assessment was conducted in July and August, so it does not take into account Ukraine’s territorial gains since September 1). Also, as of July, there were 48 damaged grain storage facilities for 2.25 million tons on the territory controlled by Ukraine, and 27 damaged facilities for 0.82 million tons were under the control of Russia in the occupied areas.

In total, there were at least 3.07 million tonnes of destroyed or severely damaged storage facilities in both Ukraine- and Russia-controlled areas. These damaged facilities represent at least 5.36% of the pre-war storage capacity of the Ukrainian harvest in the whole country.
