Expensive gas hurt hard the greenhouse business

The rise in gas prices has hit the energy-intensive industries, which have the largest share of energy resources in the cost of production. Some of the hothouse enterprises have already closed, in particular one of the largest in Europe complex, located near Kyiv.

This is reported by ProAgro Group, citing the UNIAN.

“There were 1,150 hectares of industrial greenhouses (not film ones) in Ukraine in 1992. And now there are 170 hectares,” said president of the association “Greenhouses of Ukraine” Evgeniy Chernyshenko.

He added that during the season greenhouses all over Ukraine use for heating from 57 to 60 million cubic meters of gas.

The Ukrainian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs commented that given the current conjuncture, the prices for Ukrainian greenhouse products could jump by at least 40%, and that would make them uncompetitive along with cheaper imports.

To minimize the losses for the Ukrainian buyers and domestic business, the Association “Greenhouses of Ukraine” together with the Ukrainian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs appealed to the government with a request to provide a comprehensive support for the industry.

In this list there is a call for state aid in energy re-equipment of greenhouse farms and reduction of the cost of credit funds.
