More than 100 cases of ecocide were recorded in Ukraine over the war

Ecocide is the mass destruction of plant or animal life, poisoning of the atmosphere or water resources, as well as other actions that can cause environmental disaster. The most dangerous for the environment are russian attacks on Ukrainian nuclear power plants, infrastructure and industrial facilities, nature reserves and ecosystems, and water resources.

Now more than 100 cases of ecocide and more than 1200 facts of negative impact on the environment (bursting of shells, burning of forests, chemical pollution, etc.) have been recorded. This was written on her page in Facebook by the Commissioner for Human Rights Lyudmila Denisova, reports “ProAgro Group”.

“Targeted destruction of nature and environmental pollution as a result of military actions of the Russian aggressor will have long-term consequences not only for Ukraine, but also for many countries of the world. Ecocide entails the disappearance of flora, extinction of fauna, poisoning of the atmosphere or water resources. Since its effect can extend to the territory of a large number of states, it is necessary to introduce a unified and effective mechanism of counteraction to this crime”, – noted the ombudsman.

She stressed that the actions of Russia in Ukraine violate not only national but also international law and customs. First of all, they violate the UN Charter, as well as the Geneva Convention, which prohibits the use of methods or means of warfare that are intended to harm the environment.
